Apex LegendsHow to Get the Most Free Legend Tokens in Apex Legends
In Apex Legends, Apex Coins barely fall from the sky: the game spreads its generosity through a different currency instead. This rundown separates what you can genuinely earn by playing from what only comes with paying once.
What is the fastest and most efficient way to get Legend Tokens in Apex Legends?
Apex juggles three separate resources. Apex Coins are the premium currency and are bought with real money, apart from what the premium battle pass hands back. Legend Tokens are earned by raising your account level and are used to unlock Legends and recolours. Crafting Metals let you build specific cosmetics without going through the store. Understanding what each one covers stops you overspending on things another currency already pays for.
Every day
- Battle pass stars; no direct currency, but they are what makes completing the pass possible
Daily and weekly challenges
Pass progress is measured in stars, and stars come from daily challenges that rotate each day and from weekly challenges with longer goals. The dailies are short: damage with a specific Legend, revives, loot pings. The weeklies ask for more time but count for far more. Since the pass is the only thing that returns coins, these challenges are, indirectly, your source of Apex Coins. Weeklies usually stack up for a while, so missing a day does not ruin everything.
- 600 tokens for every account level from level 4 onwards
Legend Tokens from levelling up
Your account level rises with the experience from each match and hands out 600 Legend Tokens per level from the fourth onwards. This is the currency that is genuinely earned by playing. Its main use is unlocking new Legends, which cost 12,000 tokens, exactly what Apex wants you to pay in coins if you are in a hurry. Saving tokens and waiting to unlock the Legend you actually want is the cleanest way to never touch the premium currency for playable content.
Every week
- Zero Apex Coins; it hands out packs, crafting metals and cosmetics
The free battle pass track
Every account moves along the free track without paying. What matters is being clear about its nature: it hands out Apex Packs, metals and cosmetics, but no Apex Coins. Its real value is in the metals, which let you craft exactly the cosmetic you want instead of trusting the randomness of packs. Progressing along this track also banks your progress, so if you ever activate the premium pass you immediately receive everything accumulated on the paid track.
- Specific cosmetics in exchange for Legend Tokens, on a limited rotation
Recolours in the rotating store
The store rotates its catalogue periodically and some of those items, above all recolours of existing skins, can be paid for with Legend Tokens instead of Apex Coins. It is the only section where tokens buy something purely cosmetic. Since the rotation is short, it is worth checking when you log in and deciding quickly, but also keeping a cushion of tokens for unlocking Legends: spending it all on recolours leaves character unlocks in the hands of your credit card.
One time only
- A 950-coin purchase that returns 1,200 across the pass, plus crafting metals
The premium battle pass cycle
This is the only sustained route to Apex Coins without paying on a recurring basis. The premium pass costs 950 coins and its track returns 1,200 spread across various tiers, along with enough metals to craft a legendary cosmetic. If you buy in once and then complete every pass in full, you finance the next one with room to spare. The condition is finishing the track: leaving it half done means never reaching the tiers that return the coins, and the cycle breaks.
Events only
- Cosmetics, packs and sometimes metals; Apex Coins almost never show up
Seasonal events and watch rewards
Respawn runs themed events with their own reward tracks plus watch campaigns tied to official competitions. What they hand out is cosmetic: skins, banners, charms and the odd pack. Do not go in expecting premium currency, because Apex Coins are almost nonexistent outside the pass. Their appeal is getting pieces for free that the store sells at a high price, so the saving comes from not buying rather than from taking in currency.
What does not work
No generator can add Legend Tokens to your Apex Legends account: the balance is handled on the gameβs servers and there is no way to touch it from outside. If you arrived looking for one, we explain in detail how they work on the inside and why they always end the same way.

How do you get Apex Coins without paying at some point?
In practice you do not get them without an initial investment. The only meaningful source of Apex Coins is the premium track of the battle pass, which has to be unlocked with 950 coins. Once inside, the track returns 1,200 and the cycle sustains itself as long as you complete every season. Outside of that, one-off promotions hand out cosmetics, not premium currency.
How many Legend Tokens does it take to unlock a Legend?
Twelve thousand tokens per Legend. Since every account level from the fourth onwards hands out 600, that is twenty levels of progress per character. Levels come quickly at first and then stretch out, so a new account unlocks its first Legend fairly easily and the ones after that demand a lot more play. That is exactly why it pays not to spend tokens on recolours until you have worked through your list of Legends.
What should you do with Crafting Metals?
Save them to craft the specific piece you want instead of relying on random packs. The pass, on both its free and premium tracks, is the main source of metals, and the premium track hands out enough for a legendary cosmetic. Crafting has one clear advantage over opening packs: you choose exactly what you get, with no duplicates and no surprises.
Why does the free pass track hand out no Apex Coins?
Because the coins are the incentive that keeps people buying the premium track. If the free track handed them out, the model would stop making commercial sense. In exchange it compensates with packs, metals and cosmetics, and it banks all your paid-track progress in case you decide to activate it later, in which case you receive everything accumulated up to that tier at once.
