Gems do not rain down in Clash of Clans, but the game hands out far more of them than most players ever claim. These are the real free sources, ordered by how often you can repeat them.
What is the fastest and most efficient way to get Gems in Clash of Clans?
Gems are the premium currency in Clash of Clans: they speed up upgrades, buy builders and, in a pinch, convert into gold or elixir. Supercell does not give them away in bulk but drip-feeds them through several parallel routes: obstacles that respawn on the map, achievements you collect once, the Builder Base mine and community events. Understanding that trickle matters, because the most profitable long-term purchase, the extra builder, costs hundreds of gems.

- Between 0 and 6 gems per obstacle removed, with plenty of zeroes in between
Clearing village obstacles
The map generates new trees, bushes and rocks every few hours up to a cap of objects on screen. Removing each one costs a little gold or elixir and ties up a builder for a few seconds, and on finishing it can drop gems at random. Because the spawn rate is capped, leaving your village overgrown stalls the counter and costs you rolls. The useful routine is to drop by every day, clear whatever has appeared and keep space free.

Maintaining the Gem Mine
In the Builder Base there is a ruined building that gets rebuilt once you reach Builder Hall level 3. From then on it produces gems on its own, at a rate that rises with each upgrade paid for in elixir. It has limited storage, so if you do not come by to collect, it stops accumulating and you lose production. Levelling it is slow and the first upgrades pay little, but it is the only truly passive source in the game and it is worth prioritising early.

Hunting the Gem Box
Every now and then a wooden box with visible gems appears among the obstacles. It is removed like a tree, ties up a builder and hands over a fixed amount well above what any bush gives. Only one can exist on the map at a time and it needs free space to spawn, so keeping the village clear is the only way not to block it. The Builder Base has its own equivalent box, with its own spawn cycle.

Squeezing the Clan Games
During Clan Games each member racks up points by completing attack, defence or resource-destruction challenges. The clan unlocks shared reward tiers, and the options you can pick from usually include gems, alongside books and potions. It depends on the group: in an inactive clan you barely open the first tiers. You can also leave the reward unclaimed until the next event, which lets you bank it for when you genuinely need the speed-up.

Collecting your pending achievements
Each achievement has three levels and the reward is not credited automatically: you have to go into the menu and claim it. Many complete themselves without you trying while you upgrade buildings, donate troops, earn stars or unlock new troops, so it is common to have dozens of gems sitting there unnoticed. It is the biggest free pot in the game, but it is collected only once per account. Go through it before you consider any spending, especially if you have been playing for months without opening that tab.

Completing the free track of the Season Challenges
Every season brings a list of challenges with a free track running alongside the paid one. Winning wars, donating troops or destroying a certain amount of resources adds points that gradually unlock rewards, and loose gems turn up among them alongside books and loot. It is not a big figure, but it repeats month after month and only asks you to play normally. If your storages are full when you claim a resource prize, part of the overflow converts into gems.

Taking advantage of events and limited-time challenges
Supercell frequently runs events with themed troops and single-use challenges, plus anniversary campaigns and community celebrations. The prizes vary: the norm is upgraded troops, boosts and books, but some campaigns include gems directly or chests containing them. It is worth logging in even just to claim, because many of these challenges expire within days. Be wary of any outside site promising those same rewards from beyond the game: the handout is always internal.
What does not work

How do you get gems in Clash of Clans without spending money?
By combining four sources: clearing obstacles daily, claiming every pending achievement tier, maintaining and upgrading the Builder Base Gem Mine, and taking part in Clan Games and Season Challenges. None gives much on its own, but together they can fund an extra builder within a few months of regular play.
How many gems does the Gem Mine produce per day?
At its early levels production is almost symbolic, under one gem a day, and it climbs with each upgrade paid for in Builder Base elixir. At max level it sits around five gems a day. It has limited storage, so if you take several days to collect, it fills up and stops generating anything new.
What should you buy with your first free gems?
The extra builder. Each additional builder multiplies your simultaneous upgrades and its effect is felt for the whole game, whereas speeding up a single upgrade is consumed in minutes. After that, the most sensible use is filling long dead time or buying the fifth and sixth builders. Trading gems for gold or elixir is the least profitable conversion.
Why does the Gem Box never appear for me?
Because the map has a cap on simultaneous obstacles and, if it is full of uncleared trees and rocks, there is no room for anything new to spawn. On top of that, only one box can exist at a time and its appearance is random within a cycle of several days. Clearing often is the only way to avoid blocking the cycle.
