How to Get the Most Free Battle Points in Dota 2

Dota 2 is a case apart: heroes are free from the very first minute and you only pay for cosmetics. Shards are earned by playing and your inventory can be sold on Steam.

What is the fastest and most efficient way to get Battle Points in Dota 2?

Before talking about currencies it helps to understand the model: in Dota 2 no character is locked. All hundred-plus heroes are available from your first match, so nothing you buy affects the game. What is on sale are cosmetics, and the currency you can earn by playing, Shards, exists precisely for that. On top of that, your inventory is a real asset: items can be sold on the Steam Community Market and used to fund other purchases inside the ecosystem.

Every day

  • Continuous progress while playing the heroes you already use

    Hero challenges and hero levels

Every hero has its own objectives that are completed by playing normally: meeting certain conditions in a match raises its badge and unlocks associated rewards, among them Shards and chat wheel options. You do not have to deviate from how you play, just check what the hero asks for before the match and steer your decisions a little. Focusing on two or three characters pays off more than rotating through the whole roster, because advanced levels pay better.

  • Loose cosmetics, some of them sellable

    Items that drop while playing

Dota hands out items at the end of matches, at no cost and with no conditions. Most are common pieces, but they pile up quickly and many can be listed on the Community Market. Even if each one is worth pennies, the volume across months adds up to enough to fund a specific purchase without reaching for your card. It is worth reviewing your inventory now and then instead of letting it grow forgotten, and separating what you want to equip from what you are going to sell.

Every week

  • Guaranteed Shards, doubled with a subscription

    Winning three matches a week

The weekly win reward is open to all players, not just those paying for the subscription. Three wins claim a fixed Shard package; subscribers receive double for the same thing. It is the foundation on which any no-spend saving is built, and it does not demand high-level performance: wins in the normal queues count. If you play rarely, at least make sure you close out those three before the week resets.

  • Shards depending on what your guild contributes

    Guilds: contracts and weekly rank

Joining an active guild is one of the most profitable decisions a free player can make. Each week the guild receives a rank based on collective performance and distributes Shards among its members. Individual contracts add specific objectives by hero or role that both add points to the group and pay out personally. Finding a guild with people who play often changes the final figure considerably, because the distribution depends on the rank reached, not just on your own activity.

One time only

  • Steam balance reusable inside the platform

Selling your inventory on the Steam Market

This is the quirk that sets Dota 2 apart from almost any other game with a premium currency: tradable cosmetics can be sold on the Steam Community Market and the proceeds sit in your wallet as balance. With that balance you can buy other Dota items, or anything else in the store. Two important caveats: the balance cannot be withdrawn to a bank account, and items bought in the Shard Shop are not tradable.

Events only

  • Shards, cosmetics and rewards for taking part

    Seasonal events and compendiums

Valve concentrates a good share of its content in campaigns and compendiums tied to the big tournaments. Even though the paid part is the most visible, there are usually free tracks with quests, and the fantasy game hands out Shards based on the points your lineup accumulates. Every event changes format, so the sensible move is to go in at the start, read what can be obtained without paying and set yourself the objectives that sit within the free part before it closes.

  • Accumulating points that raise your profile

    Progressing your Dota level

The points that feed your Dota level add up through matches, specific feats, achievements and event participation, and every hundred trophy points equals one profile level. It is not a currency you spend in the store but an indicator of experience shown to other players. It is worth understanding so you do not confuse it with Shards: one measures how much you have played, the other is what you can actually exchange for cosmetics.

What does not work

No generator can add Battle Points to your Dota 2 account: the balance is handled on the game’s servers and there is no way to touch it from outside. If you arrived looking for one, we explain in detail how they work on the inside and why they always end the same way.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get Shards without paying for the subscription?

Players without a subscription claim the weekly reward for winning three matches, though at half what subscribers receive. On top of that come the guild's weekly distributions, guild contracts, hero level progress and event rewards, including the compendium fantasy game. The total builds slowly but it is enough for items in the Shard Shop.

What do you gain by paying in Dota 2 if every hero is free?

Appearance only. All hundred-plus heroes are available from your first match, with no unlocks and no rotations, so no payment affects balance or gives a competitive edge. What you buy are cosmetic sets, effects, announcer packs, wards and seasonal items. That is why playing without spending anything places no limit at all on what you can do inside a match.

How does selling items on the Steam Market work?

Tradable cosmetics in your inventory can be listed on the Community Market and, when another player buys them, the amount arrives as Steam wallet balance. That balance can buy other items or games, but it cannot be withdrawn to a bank account. Items acquired with Shards are excluded: they are neither tradable nor sellable.

Why are there no Shard generators that work?

Because the balance lives on Valve's servers and no external site can write to them. The pages promising it are after your Steam account credentials, which also hold your game library and your tradable inventory. It is a particularly attractive target for theft. Everything legitimate goes through the game client or the official market, never through an external form.
