Two economies coexist in The Elder Scrolls Online. Gold is generated by playing and moves between players through guild traders; Crowns are the premium currency of the Crown Store and never drop as loot. There is a bridge between them that Zenimax explicitly tolerates: the gifting system. On top of that sit Seals of Endeavor, a parallel currency that you genuinely earn by playing and that buys crate items without opening your wallet.

The free track of the Tamriel Tome
With Season Zero, in April 2026, the old Endeavors and the daily login rewards were merged into Tamriel Tomes. The tome has a free track and a premium one, and the free track still hands out Seals of Endeavor, the currency that buys outright the items that used to come only from crates. The routine is short: log in, look at the challenges the tome has assigned you and knock out the ones that fit what you were going to do anyway. Progress rewards consistency, not marathon sessions.

No gold means no gifts, so this is the laborious half of the equation. Guild traders are the only player-to-player shop window, and that is where crafting materials, style stones, motifs and veteran consumables get listed. Joining a guild with an active trader in a busy city multiplies what you make for the same effort.

Several times a year, zone events go live and hand out their own crates with cosmetics, mounts and piles of materials. The sensible strategy is twofold: keep the cosmetics you care about and sell the surplus materials, because supply spikes during the event and it pays to wait a few weeks before listing them at a better price with guild traders.

Zenimax runs campaigns with a list of objectives and a bigger reward for completing them, and on several occasions the prize has been a large batch of Seals of Endeavor. It is worth checking the campaign panel as soon as you log in after an update, because some require lengthy activities and leaving them for the final days is the most common way to miss out on the final reward.

Why does buying gold or Crowns on external sites put your account at risk?
Because it changes the nature of the transaction. Gifting in game in exchange for gold is allowed; paying with real money outside the game is not. Zenimax punishes swapping internal goods for outside money, and the penalties hit both the seller and the recipient. On top of that, that gold usually comes from compromised accounts, so having the goods clawed back is routine.
