Mario Kart Tour runs two currencies: rubies, used in the Spotlight Shop, the Mii racing suit shop and to enter Coin Rush, and ordinary coins, which buy drivers, karts and gliders from the daily selects. Rubies were the paid currency, but sales have closed and all that remain are the ones you get from playing. With the shutdown announced, the game's economy has changed completely.

Every tour hands out gifts based on the points you build up in the cups, and rubies are among those deliveries. On top of that comes the login bonus, which you collect just by opening the game. With the service about to close, it is worth logging in every day even if you are not going to race: every missed delivery is gone for good.

The coins you pick up on the track are added to your balance, but the game applies a daily limit to this particular source, and it resets each day. A glider that multiplies your haul changes the result considerably.

The challenge cards set objectives you complete by racing normally: using particular items, chaining drifts, hitting a certain score on specific courses. Look them over before racing so you can pick your driver and course deliberately and close several in the same session.

From the start of the Holiday Tour on 4 August 2026 until the service closes on 29 September, Nintendo has opened the Gold Pass perks to every player for free, with no subscription and nothing to manage. That includes the gold gifts and challenges, the 200cc class, double base points and double maximum coins per day, the multiplayer bar filling at twice the speed and the rank cap at S+9. It is the biggest change to the game's economy in years.

Level-ups and ranked cups
Raising your player level hands out rubies as a bonus, and the ranked cups pay prizes according to the tier you finish in when the cycle closes. It is not income you can force in a day, but it comes along with any extended run of play. With the shutdown in sight, your ranking matters less as long-term progression and more as an immediate source of rubies to spend before 29 September, which is when everything you have banked stops being any use.

What happens to my rubies when the service closes?
When the service ends on 29 September 2026 the game stops working, and with it any balance left on the account. Nintendo has closed ruby sales and has announced no refund programme, either for unspent rubies or for Gold Pass subscriptions that ran past that date. The practical conclusion is that saved rubies are only worth something if you spend them before the shutdown.
How do I get rubies now that they are no longer sold?
Only by playing. The active sources are the daily login bonus, the gifts each tour hands out as you build up points, player level-ups, ranked cup prizes and the challenge cards, including the gold ones, which are now open to all players. There is no other route, and since the Spotlight Shop catalogue rotates, it is worth deciding early what you want to spend them on.
How many coins can I gather in a day?
Coins collected while racing have a daily cap that resets each day, and that cap is currently doubled because the gold perks have been unlocked for everybody. Coins from Coin Rush, from tour gifts, from the login bonus and from completing challenges, on the other hand, do not count against that limit. Once the racing cap is used up, Coin Rush is the way to keep adding more.
What should I prioritise in the weeks of service that are left?
The most sensible thing is to stop hoarding and start spending. Turn leftover rubies into Coin Rush runs if you are short of coins, and put your coins into the drivers, karts and gliders in the shop that you want to try before the shutdown. Make the most of the 200cc class and the raised rank cap too, which are now available without a subscription and will disappear along with the rest of the game.
