How to Get the Most Free Gold in Dragon City

In Dragon City gems come in slowly and through many small routes at once. Added together, they let a consistent player fund a good part of the events without spending money, as long as they do not burn them speeding up hatching.

What is the fastest and most efficient way to get Gold in Dragon City?

Dragon City draws a clear line between its two currencies. Gold is your passive income: it is produced by dragons placed in habitats, at a rate that depends on the species and on each dragon's level, and it is spent on clearing obstacles, buying expansions and unlocking new islands. Gems are the premium currency and are not produced in any building: they arrive through towers, battles, collections and events. They are spent on skipping breeding and hatching times, buying specific eggs and advancing stages on event islands.

Every day

  • 1 gem every 24 hours, from Dragon Master level 12 onwards

Activate the Jewelem Tower every day

The Jewelem Tower unlocks when you reach level 12 and has to be rebuilt before you can use it. Once active, it delivers one gem every twenty-four hours with a single tap. It is the smallest amount on this list and also the most reliable: it does not depend on opponents, on events or on your play level. The condition is logging in daily, because the counter does not bank the days you miss. Over a month of routine it adds up to a far from negligible sum for an account that does not pay.

  • A few gems per run of wins, plus gold in the early leagues

Fight in the league and in stadium tournaments

Battles against other players hand out gems when you string wins together, and stadium tournaments add gems and gold for finishing near the top. It is the source that most rewards having a well-built team: you want to cover several elements to answer your opponent's weaknesses rather than levelling up a single strong dragon. Bear in mind that gold stops being handed out in the more advanced leagues, so past a certain point battles become a source of gems only.

  • Continuous passive income, heavily dependent on the dragon's species and level

    Optimise your habitats' gold production

Gold is generated by the dragons placed in habitats, with a base rate per species and an increase per level that tapers off from level ten. Since space is limited, the important decision is who you keep inside: pure, legendary and war species produce considerably more than basic ones. Collect often, because habitats fill up and stop generating. Gold is needed above all for expansions, which rise in price in bands until they level off, and for unlocking islands.

One time only

  • One guaranteed dragon plus variable prizes, which can include gems or gold

    Complete Dragon Book collections

The Dragon Book groups species into themed albums and pays a reward for completing each one. It always delivers a specific dragon and, on top of that, an additional prize that varies between gems, gold, food, experience and upgrade items. Since these are one-time payouts, it is worth checking which albums you have nearly finished before deciding what to breed: often you are missing a dragon that comes from a basic combination and that you were ignoring because it looked unremarkable. It is the most overlooked gem income in the game.

  • 1 gem for every level reached, plus content unlocks

    Raise your Dragon Master level

Every level-up delivers one gem. It does not sound like much, but experience comes in on its own from breeding, hatching, building habitats and levelling up dragons, so it is an income that rides along with everything else. Levels also unlock buildings and features, including the Jewelem Tower itself. In practice this rewards playing broadly, breeding and placing new dragons, rather than concentrating on a handful of combat specimens.

Events only

  • On Maze Island, 2,000 coins every 24 hours across the event's eleven days

Work through event islands with free currency

Event islands rotate constantly: maze, puzzle, race and similar variants. On the maze, you do not have to buy the coins with gems if you play sensibly: they are generated by collecting gold and food, feeding dragons and breeding, up to the daily cap of 2,000. With eleven days of event that comes to around 22,000 free coins, enough for several dragons on the track. The key is not to spend them at the start: some dragons only activate halfway through the event, and running out of coins leaves you locked out of them.

  • Exclusive dragons and chests with gems as you clear stages of the track

    Plan for the Heroic Race

The Heroic Race is the calendar's long competitive event and it advances by completing breeding, hatching and combat phases. Its trap is precisely the spending: every wait can be skipped with gems and it is easy to empty your reserve in two days. The free way through it is to prepare the dragons you need for the combat phases in advance and to have your nest and hatchery free at the start of each stage. The chests along the track return gems, so an orderly run sustains itself.

What does not work

No generator can add Gold to your Dragon City account: the balance is handled on the game’s servers and there is no way to touch it from outside. If you arrived looking for one, we explain in detail how they work on the inside and why they always end the same way.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get free gems sustainably in Dragon City?

By adding up small, constant sources instead of chasing one big hit. The Jewelem Tower gives one gem a day, league battles and tournaments contribute several per run, every level-up delivers one more and Dragon Book collections pay one-time prizes. With that routine, a regular player builds up enough to take on the island events without buying anything.

How many maze coins can you gather without spending gems?

On Maze Island the game hands out up to 2,000 coins every twenty-four hours and the event lasts eleven days, which comes to around 22,000 free coins in total. They are generated by playing normally: collecting gold and food, feeding dragons and breeding. On top of that you can add extra coins from temporary quests, so the real total is usually a little higher.

What is the difference between gold and gems when it comes to progressing?

Gold is abundant and renewable: your dragons produce it without you doing anything and it only limits how far you expand your land. Gems are scarce and they buy time, above all breeding and hatching skips during events. That is why the most expensive mistake is using gems to paper over a shortage of gold: gold comes back on its own, gems do not.

Why is it worth saving gems before a big event starts?

Because track events, like the Heroic Race or the maze islands, are built around waits that can be skipped by paying. Arriving with a reserve lets you unblock a particular stage and take home dragons that would otherwise be out of reach. Arriving without one forces you to choose, and spending halfway through an event usually works out worse than having planned the run from day one.
