What does scale with power are the combat events, so in the early phase it is best to lean on the daily routine and join an active alliance as soon as possible.
How should I split the gems I gather?
The usual priority is expanding your construction and research queues, because that spending multiplies all your future progress instead of solving a one-off problem. After that come alliance shop refreshes when valuable items appear.
