In Destiny 2, Silver is only obtained by paying with real money. Bright Dust, on the other hand, is earned by playing, and since update 9.7.0 in June 2026 almost all of it comes through the Seasonal Hub.
What is the fastest and most efficient way to get Bright Dust in Destiny 2?
Destiny 2 runs two store currencies. Silver is bought from your platform's store and covers Eververse items, campaign skips, pass ranks and archived passes. Bright Dust is earned inside the game and buys part of the Eververse cosmetic catalogue: ornaments, shaders, emotes, Ghosts and ships. There is no conversion between the two: Bright Dust is not bought with Silver and cannot be traded for it, and it does not turn into other currencies such as Chronologs either.

Daily Seasonal Hub challenges
Since 9.7.0 the Seasonal Hub is where most of the Bright Dust on offer is handed out. Its daily challenges ask for things you already do when you log in: completing activities from a particular playlist, defeating enemies with a damage type or closing out a couple of Crucible matches. They refresh at the daily reset, so Bright Dust you miss cannot be recovered afterwards. If you are only playing for half an hour, check what the Hub is asking for first and pick the matching activity instead of choosing at random.

Weekly Seasonal Hub challenges
The Hub's weekly objectives pay considerably more than the dailies, and Bungie raised the amounts across all Hub sources with 9.7.0. They usually ask for a number of completed activities, milestones in a specific mode or accumulated progress, so they close out on their own if you play across several sessions. Since they expire at the weekly reset, it is worth checking them on the first day and steering the week's matches towards them rather than leaving them until the last minute.

Free track of the Triumphant Rewards Pass
The Triumphant Pass that arrived with 9.7.0 has no expiry date, and all of its Bright Dust rewards sit on the free track. That changes the approach compared with the old seasonal passes: there is no rush to climb ranks before the season closes, because the pass will still be there. You advance it by accumulating experience from any activity, so the pass's Bright Dust trickles in while you chase other things. The pass's own experience boosters speed that trickle up.

Standard decryption of Bright Engrams
With 9.7.0, Bright Engrams can be focused by category by spending Bright Dust, but that focusing only returns items. Bright Dust gifts only come from standard, unfocused decryption. If what you want is to build up currency rather than a specific piece, open your engrams the normal way. Bear in mind that focusing guarantees non-duplicate items and that its contents run out as you claim them, so the choice between focusing and decrypting depends on whether you are missing a particular cosmetic or simply want to pad out the wardrobe.

Dismantle cosmetics you are never going to use
Dismantling cosmetic items that came from Eververse returns a fraction of their Bright Dust. It is the least profitable source of all and not something to play around, but it is worth clearing out the pile of repeated shaders and ornaments that builds up over several seasons every now and then. Check first that the piece is not part of a set you want to complete, because getting it again can cost far more than the handful of Bright Dust dismantling gives back.

Monument of Triumph: cosmetics without touching Bright Dust
The Monument of Triumph, permanent since June 2026, does not hand out Bright Dust but Legendary Marks for completing milestones from across the game's history. Those marks are redeemed for armour ornaments, accessories and weapon engrams. It is not a currency source, but it serves the same practical purpose: it gets you cosmetics without spending anything. Before burning Bright Dust in Eververse it is worth checking whether the piece you want is already available through that route, especially if you have been playing for years and have plenty of Triumphs done.

How do you get free Silver in Destiny 2?
You don't. Silver is the game's paid currency and it only enters your account by buying bundles from your platform's store or through packages that already include it. Bungie does not hand it out for playing and there is no way to convert Bright Dust into Silver. Any page offering free Silver through generators or codes is lying or trying to steal your account.
How has earning Bright Dust changed since update 9.7.0?
Bungie centralised Bright Dust in the Seasonal Hub and raised the amounts its sources pay out. In exchange, it retired seasonal events such as Guardian Games, Solstice, Festival of the Lost and The Dawning, which used to offer specific Bright Dust quests. It also moved Zavala's weekly buyback to Chronologs, so that no longer contributes Bright Dust. The rest of the currency comes from the Triumphant Pass's free track.
What is worth buying first with the Bright Dust you save up?
Eververse now has a daily deals tab that rotates its selection of Bright Dust items every day, so a cosmetic that is not there today may show up tomorrow. Before spending, check whether the piece you want can be obtained with Legendary Marks at the Monument of Triumph. Since the catalogue purchasable with Bright Dust was widened with 9.7.0, it is worth watching the store for a few days before deciding.
Why does engram focusing not return Bright Dust?
Because focusing costs Bright Dust rather than giving it: you spend between 300 and 900 depending on the category to guarantee a non-duplicate item from that family. Focused engrams only hand out items. If you want Bright Dust gifts to appear, you have to use standard, unfocused decryption. That is the key difference between the two ways of opening a Bright Engram since update 9.7.0.
