How to Get the Most Free Gold in Diablo IV

Diablo IV's Platinum is a paid currency with one exception: the seasonal Reliquary hands out a limited amount to anyone who plays. Gold, by contrast, is generated without limit by killing and selling.

What is the fastest and most efficient way to get Gold in Diablo IV?

Diablo IV runs two separate economies. Platinum is the shop's premium currency: it pays for cosmetics, transmogs and access to the paid Reliquaries. It is bought with real money and does not drop from enemies. The only free route is the Platinum nodes included in the free track of the seasonal Reliquary, unlocked with Favor Tokens earned by playing. Gold is the internal, unlimited currency, and it funds rerolling affixes, transmogging, repairing and upgrading gear.

Every day

  • Enough tokens for several Reliquary nodes

Build up Favor Tokens by playing the season

Favor Tokens are the Reliquary's progression currency and they are earned simply by playing: killing monsters and completing quests fills the Favor bar, and every full bar hands over a token. They cannot be bought with real money. Storage is capped at 99 tokens, so it is worth spending them before you get close to the limit so you do not waste progress. Whatever you do not spend can carry over with you to the next season, within that same cap, which lets you save between seasons.

  • Sustained income of Gold and materials

Farm Gold in nightmare dungeons and zone events

Gold drops from enemies, chests and quests, but the real rate depends on monster density. Nightmare dungeons, chained zone events and world activities with lots of enemies per minute pay far more than roaming the map on your own. Raising the difficulty level multiplies both the amount of Gold and the quality of the loot, as long as your character can keep up without dying. Amulets and rings with a bonus to Gold found help when they do not cost you damage.

  • Usually beats the Gold that drops on the ground

    Sell and salvage loot systematically

A good part of a session's Gold does not come from the ground but from selling. The rare and legendary items that do not fit your build sell to the vendor for far from negligible sums, while salvaging hands over the materials you need to upgrade gear. The practical rule is to sell what only gives Gold and salvage what gives materials you are short of. Emptying the stash before every long session stops you running out of space partway through a good loot streak.

  • Stops you burning hundreds of thousands of Gold

Keep your Gold spending on rerolling and transmog under control

In Diablo IV it is easier to go broke rerolling than to run out of income. Every attempt to change an affix makes the next one on the same piece more expensive, so pushing on a mediocre item eats a whole session's budget with nothing to show for it. The reasonable approach is to save rerolling for pieces that already carry good base affixes and accept imperfect values on the rest. The same applies to upgrading gear you are going to replace within a few hours of play.

Every week

  • Spikes of Gold, materials and Favor progress

Squeeze the seasonal events and activities

Every season introduces its own activities, summonable bosses and recurring events that concentrate enemies and rewards into a short span. As well as Gold and materials, those activities fill the Favor bar far faster than free play, which translates into more tokens and therefore reaching the Platinum nodes sooner. It is worth checking the patch notes when the season starts: temporary bonuses and weeks with increased rewards change the return per hour quite a bit.

One time only

  • Redeemable balance, not Platinum directly

Make use of Microsoft's external rewards programmes

Microsoft runs a points programme that builds up by searching and using its services and that can be redeemed for store balance or store items, including Diablo IV products. It is not Platinum that lands in the game and it is not a fast method: it takes months of accumulation and its rewards change frequently. We include it because it is an official, legitimate route, unlike the pages promising free Platinum in exchange for your account details, which are frauds without exception.

Events only

  • A fixed amount of Platinum per season

Claim the Platinum nodes on the free track

Within the seasonal Reliquary, the free track includes some nodes that hand over Platinum directly in exchange for Favor Tokens. It is the only Platinum a player who spends no money will ever see on their account, and since the Reliquary lets you choose which node to unlock in any order, the logical move is to prioritise those nodes over the cosmetics. Built up across several seasons in a row, that balance ends up covering some small shop item, not a full pass.

What does not work

No generator can add Gold to your Diablo IV account: the balance is handled on the game’s servers and there is no way to touch it from outside. If you arrived looking for one, we explain in detail how they work on the inside and why they always end the same way.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get Platinum without paying in Diablo IV?

The only route inside the game is the Platinum nodes on the free track of the seasonal Reliquary, unlocked by spending Favor Tokens earned from killing monsters and completing quests. There is no Platinum that drops from enemies and Gold cannot be converted into Platinum. Any page offering free Platinum in exchange for your credentials is a fraud and puts your Battle.net account at risk.

How much free Platinum does a player gather over a full season?

The amount depends on the season, because Blizzard adjusts the Reliquary table each time, but it is always well below the price of the paid Reliquary. In practice, playing several seasons in a row and reserving your Favor Tokens for the Platinum nodes lets you put together enough balance for the odd shop item, not to fund premium access on an ongoing basis.

Why does my character earn Gold so slowly compared with others?

It is almost always a matter of enemy density and difficulty. Roaming the open map killing scattered groups pays a fraction of what nightmare dungeons or chained events on a high difficulty give. Not selling matters too: the Gold from selling rares and legendaries usually beats what drops on the ground. And rerolling without judgement devours income faster than it is generated.

What should you do with Favor Tokens as you approach the 99 cap?

Spend them, because anything over that cap is lost. If you are near the limit and have not yet decided which cosmetics you want, the safe option is to unlock the nodes that hand over Platinum first, since that balance stays on the account indefinitely. Tokens left over when the season ends do carry over to the next one, always within that same limit of 99.
